Det \u00e5 skape og gi nytt liv kunne v\u00e6re dramatisk. For moren medf\u00f8rte svangerskap og f\u00f8dsel en betydelig risiko, barned\u00f8deligheten var h\u00f8y, og bestemmelse av farskap var forbundet med en usikkerhet som vi ikke kjenner i dag.  Foreldrerollen ble definert gjennom det sosiale hierarkiet. Hvem du var, var hovedsaklig bestemt av hvem som var foreldrene dine. Den heldige fikk leve opp, den uheldige kunne bli satt ut for \u00e5 d\u00f8. \u00c5 f\u00f8de mange barn var ikke det samme som \u00e5 oppdra mange arvinger.  I denne boken m\u00f8ter vi magiske forestillinger, ulike samfunnsforhold og religi\u00f8se strukturer. Vi ser samvirket mellom datidens naturvitenskapelige forestillinger og myter, mellom kropper og ritualer i en fascinerende tidsepoke som strekker seg fra \u00e5r 500 f\u00f8r v\u00e5r tidsregnings begynnelse til om lag 500 \u00e5r etter.
