V\u00e5ren 1916 bestemte den tyske generalen von Falkenhayn seg for \u00e5 starte en storoffensiv mot festningsbyen Verdun og tvinge den franske h\u00e6ren inn i et desperat forsvar av utsatte posisjoner, der ilden fra de mektige tyske kanonene kunne kverne den istykker. Slik skulle Frankrike knekkes og krigen avgj\u00f8res. Tyskerne angrep med voldsom kraft 21.februar 1916. I time etter time regnet granatene ned over de franske stillingene.
