Soldatene hadde f\u00e5tt i oppdrag \u00e5 hindre Gloria og en h\u00e5ndfull andre svarte ungdommer i \u00e5 komme inn p\u00e5 skolen, som inntil nylig var forbeholdt hvite elever.<\/p>\n<p>En h\u00f8yesterettsdom hadde sl\u00e5tt fast at segregering i skolen var grunnlovsstridig, men guvern\u00f8ren i Arkansas ville det annerledes. USAs president m\u00e5tte derfor ty til drastiske tiltak for \u00e5 sikre ungdommenes skolegang.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Little Rock Nine<\/em>, som de svarte ungdommene ble kalt, ble ikoner i borgerrettsbevegelsens historie. De har mottatt en rekke utmerkelser i ettertid. Men prisen de betalte var h\u00f8y, i form av trakassering, vold og drapstrusler.<\/p>\n<p>I boken\u00a0<em>Gloria.
