Luther ble bannlyst, men fortsatte kritikken av pavekirken med st\u00f8tte fra store deler av Europa. Reformasjonen skjedde i en brytningstid og f\u00f8rte til grunnleggende endringer. Mye var nytt: Kristenheten var splittet, kongen ble den protestantiske kirkens overhode, en ny rolle som prestefrue ble skapt. Og Bibelen kunne leses av alle, men p\u00e5 dansk. Fem sakramenter forsvant, altere ble nedlagt, men mye kirkekunst fra middelalderen ble bevart. Tyrkerne var derimot en trussel som krevde nye former for korstog. Og Luthers antisemittisme videref\u00f8rte en lang tradisjon som ble utnyttet av nazistene. I Norge falt avviklingen av middelalderstaten sammen med avskaffelsen av den katolske kirken (1536-1537).
