I denne boken behandles Grunnlovens virkningshistorie, b\u00e5de i det norske samfunnet og i v\u00e5re nordiske naboland. Mye av det som i dag oppfattes som selvsagte menneskelige rettigheter og samfunnsmessige plikter, fikk sin f\u00f8rste viktige utforming p\u00e5 1800-tallet. Selv om Grunnloven ikke automatisk innf\u00f8rte et virkelig demokrati, spilte den en avgj\u00f8rende rolle for politisk deltakelse, opinionsdannelse og diskusjoner i brede lag av folket. <\/p>\n<p>I praksis ble Grunnloven raskt en sosial katalysator for nye stemmer og holdninger, blant h\u00f8y og lav, i by og p\u00e5 land, og med virkning utenfor landets grenser. Derfor var den ogs\u00e5 den mest betydningsfulle politiske faktor i dannelsen av det moderne samfunnet. Den gav folket en f\u00f8rste smak av de friheter som i dag regnes som umistelige.  <\/p>\n<p>Alle forfatterne har v\u00e6rt tilknyttet forskningsprosjektet \u00ab1814-grunnloven &#8211; Historisk virkning og sosial virkning\u00bb ved Institutt for arkeologi, konservering og historie ved Universitetet i Oslo.
