Fra 1852 var han redakt\u00f8r for tidsskriftet Folkevennen, et taler\u00f8r for dannelse og nasjonal selvstendighet, tuftet p\u00e5 kirke og religion. Hans forfatterskap begynte i 1850, da han som en ukjent l\u00e6rer i Kristiansund utgav boka om Den norske Stortyv Ole Pedersen H\u00f8ilands fuldst\u00e6ndige Liv og Levnet. Boka har v\u00e6rt sporl\u00f8st forsvunnet i over 150 \u00e5r, men et eksemplar dukket opp i hyllene til det \u00e6rverdige British Library. Hvorfor valgte Vig \u00e5 skrive om mestertyven og utbryterkongen? Hvilke kilder brukte han? I utlandet framsto Ole Pedersen som en variant av Robin Hood, som stjal fra de rike og ga til de fattige. For Ole Vig var han et skrekkeksempel p\u00e5 misbrukte muligheter. <\/p>\n<p>Det var store forskjeller mellom Ole H\u00f8iland (1796-1848) og Ole Vig (1824-1857) men det var ogs\u00e5 likehetstrekk. Den f\u00f8rste var en deklassert odelsgutt med evner og virkelyst p\u00e5 ville veier, uten anger og bot. Den andre var en fattig husmannss\u00f8nn med vitebegj\u00e6r og begrenset utdannelse. De kjempet seg gjennom livet og endte opp i ensomhet og armod.
