F\u00f8r og under andre verdenskrig var den s\u00e6rlig kontroversiell med hensyn til raseforskning og kjernefysisk forskning.  <br \/>I det store Keiser Wilhelm-selskapet fantes fremragende forskere, og b\u00e5de medl\u00f8pere til og motstandere mot nazismen. Institusjonen har opplevd to verdenskriger, og boken skildrer de vitenskapelige, politiske og etiske utfordringene knyttet til kjernefysikk og rasehygiene. <\/p>\n<p>I 1947 endret instituttet navn til Max Planck-selskapet. Oppgj\u00f8ret institusjonens fysikere tok med sin vitenskap manglet fullstendig innenfor rasebiologi og arvelighetsforskning. Her fraskrev forskerne seg alt ansvar for fors\u00f8k i konsentrasjonsleirer.
