Sovjetiske krigsfanger som hadde stupt i tusentall under tysk okkupasjon, ble liggende der de l\u00e5 gravlagt ved krigens slutt. Sommeren 1951 ble plutselig en hasteplan for krigsgravene vedtatt. Den ble d\u00f8pt &laquo;Operasjon Asfalt&raquo; og tok m\u00e5l av seg til \u00e5 grave opp og flytte rundt 8000 krigsfangelik i l\u00f8pet av noen hektiske h\u00f8stm\u00e5neder. Motstanden mot denne oppgravingen var til dels sterk i lokalsamfunn og byer der det foregikk. I arbeidet med denne boka har Halvor Fjermeros m\u00f8tt tidsvitner som levde n\u00e6r krigsfangene under krigen og siden observerte oppgravingen i 1951. Han har m\u00f8tt folk som ble hyret inn for \u00e5 grave opp og begrave likrestene, mennesker som deltok i protestaksjonene den gang og ikke minst sj\u00f8folk som var mannskap om bord p\u00e5 skipene som fraktet lik. Historien om denne hemmelige, milit\u00e6rlignende operasjonen er et av etterkrigstidas mest ukjente kapitler.
