Han tegnet og oppf\u00f8rte kirker, fengsler, skoler, stasjoner, sykehus og boliger over hele landet, deriblant Christiania botsfengsel, Gaustad asyl og Norges f\u00f8rste jernbanestasjon. Schirmer kunne til og med ha v\u00e6rt arkitekt for stortingsbygningen, om ikke en t\u00e5rnsky visekonge hadde grepet inn i siste liten. J.S. Welhaven beskrev Schirmer som &laquo;vor dueligste Architekt&raquo;, og arbeidene hans formet det moderne Norge p\u00e5 avgj\u00f8rende vis. <\/p>\n<p>Denne f\u00f8rste st\u00f8rre studien av Schirmer og hans arkitektur plasserer ham, ved hjelp av et rikt kildemateriale, midt i 1800-tallets kulturelle og politiske offentlighet. Schirmer var kosmopolittenes arkitekt.
