Samtidig tar han pulsen p\u00e5 tiden. Han er selv vevd inn i alle fortellingene, han skriver som b\u00e5de deltaker og som observat\u00f8r. <\/p>\n<p>Forfatterens livsl\u00f8p setter rammen som fanger opp denne mediehistorien, denne utviklingen av uttrykksformer fra den gladeste jazz til de mest alvorlige ord. Han forteller gjennom konkrete m\u00f8ter med programposter, spalter, musikk, b\u00f8ker, hendelser, redakt\u00f8rer, journalister og forfattere. Dahl fikk tidlig et forhold til jazz. Som student ble han knyttet til Pax Forlag, billigboken og PaxLeksikon. NRK ansatte ham til \u00e5 skrive kringkastingens historie, han ble kulturredakt\u00f8r i Dagbladet og professor i medier ved Universitetet i Oslo.
