Hun vokste opp i et borgerlig, pietetisk hjem i Oppland, hun dro til Kirkenes med sin mann doktor Andreas Wessel, reiste og fotograferte. Hun f\u00f8dte flere barn, men ingen vokste opp. Sosialismen grep henne, hun leste og hun skrev, og hun var framfor alt med \u00e5 stifte fagforeningen i gruveselskapet A\/S Sydvaranger. I avisdebattene var hun n\u00e6rmest uforsonlig. Hennes radikale og sterke holdning gjorde at hun etter hvert ble utestengt. Hjemmet til Ellisif og ektemannen ble et m\u00f8tested for alt fra de russiske revolusjon\u00e6re til vitenskapsmenn, kunstnere og forfattere, blant andre Johan Falkberget.
