I 1980 ble han den f\u00f8rste professoren i klassiske fag ved Universitet i Trondheim, og fra 1989 til 1993 var han styrer for det nyopprettede norske instituttet i Aten. Fra 1997 var han ansatt ved Universitetet i Oslo.
