Bygget sto ferdig i 1958. Vi kunne flytte inn i det 16 etasjer h\u00f8ye, slanke og spartanske regjeringsbygget, som en sa Einar Gerhardsen hadde st\u00e5tt modell for, skrev justisminister Jens Haugland.<br \/>\nEn bilvei gikk tvers igjennom bygget. Carl Nesjar, Inger Sitter, Odd Tandberg og Tore Haaland sandbl\u00e5ste kunsten rett inn i betongveggene i trapperommene. Nesjar sandbl\u00e5ste skisser av Pablo Picasso. Slik ble H\u00f8yblokken bygningskropp for en enest\u00e5ende samling kunstverk. Men bygget representerte en modernisme nasjonen aldri helt skulle forsone seg med. <\/p>\n<p>En terrorist fors\u00f8kte for snart to \u00e5r siden \u00e5 bombe bygget s\u00f8nder og sammen. Han lyktes ikke. Bygget ble st\u00e5ende fjellst\u00f8tt. Likevel er byggets skjebne uviss. Og striden om bevaring eller riving er minst like intens som for et halvt \u00e5rhundre siden.
