Ogs\u00e5 den ble nominert til Kritikerprisen. Denne gangen tar han for seg Jens Arup Seip, som skulle bli den toneangivende skikkelsen i et historiefag i rivende utvikling etter krigen. Svendsen n\u00f8yer seg ikke med \u00e5 portrettere historikere. Det er en hel norsk, akademisk kultur som settes under lupen fra den spede begynnelsen i universitetsbygningene p\u00e5 Karl Johan via den nybygde universitetscampusen p\u00e5 Blindern, til det etter hvert ogs\u00e5 ble opprettet historiske fagmilj\u00f8er p\u00e5 universiteter og h\u00f8yskoler landet rundt. Svendsen f\u00f8lger Seip etter hvert som han utvikler sin faglige autoritet. Han samler allierte rundt seg, men er ogs\u00e5 stadig i konflikt med de ledende skikkelsene p\u00e5 andre fag, som statsviteren Stein Rokkan og jusprofessoren Johs Anden\u00e6s for \u00e5 nevne noen, noe biografien p\u00e5 ingen m\u00e5te legger skjul p\u00e5. Fortellingens absolutte h\u00f8ydepunkt kommer, som seg h\u00f8r og b\u00f8r, midtveis n\u00e5r Seip f\u00f8rste gang legger frem sin teori om Norges utvikling fra embetsmannsstat via flerpartistat til \u00abettpartistat\u00bb under Arbeiderpartiet under et debattm\u00f8te p\u00e5 Chateu Neuf i 1963.
