Men det bodde folk p\u00e5 g\u00e5rdene i marka, og i boken er det mange historier om disse: om drapet p\u00e5 Fiskeliteputten, om grensetvister og tjuvjakt, om Nordmarksgodsets mektige skogsforvaltere, og om fattige husmenn. Vi kan lese om driftige kvinner som Helga Harloff og &laquo;tyske Mutter&raquo;, og om krigshelter i marka under annen verdenskrig.  Boken er rikt illustrert, b\u00e5de med gamle kart og gamle og nye bilder.
